A Happy Mother’s Day to Me-Post 3

Yesterday,Babushka’s Kinder celebrated Mother’s day. Before leaving for school, she asked me,if I was going to keep the car today. When I said,No,she started crying.. “Then how will you come for my Mother’s Day party? All the mums will come and you will be last!” After much hugging and assurances that I will reach there, before other mums, finally she left for school. I left well in time,so as to not take any chances.. In fact,I reached the stop, nearly 45 minutes early..then just walked around the shops,etc..And then about 15 minutes, before the bus arrived,I started getting terrible terrible cramps..OMG!I was sure, today is the day!I sat down ,took deep deep breaths and that seemed to help. Finally got on the bus and reached the school.
By the time,I reached,a couple of moms had already reached,I think I was the 4th or 5th one to arrive..and luckily, the first among Babushka’s friends moms. Then, started the fun 🙂
Babushka’s excitement- that one thing was worth everything!!
The teachers had done a beautiful job of setting up the room like a spa.. There was a table set up for hand spa-complete with Aveeno hand scrub-then,there was another one with lovely hand and body lotions and another one, where the kids could apply nail-polish to the mums.
Then, there was a Massage zone, complete with chiffon covered chairs,hand-held massager, and bamboo screens. There was treats table where delicious mini cupcakes waited us;also a bracelet making table and finally,a drawing table, where the kids could draw pictures of them with mums.
Oh and at the end of the party, the kids gave us red/white carnations and a potted plant with their picture on the pot. They had prepped the pots, this week, planted the seeds and the teachers had told them, that they need to wait, wait, wait till the plant got bigger and gave them beautiful flowers..But,Babushka and patience are like opposite poles of the earth..So,she watered it and watered it and watered it some more.. until, nearly 1/4 of the soil was drained out and I am pretty sure the seed has drowned..heck even the flowers,we stuck in the wet soil, look wilted!!LOL!
But anyway.. that was my mother’s day!! Hope you have a great Mother’s day too!
After the morning’s drama,a friend offered to pick us up,which I accepted gratefully and then,we took Babushka for lunch.

Pearls dropping from Babushka’s mouth-Post 2

OMG!Lately Babushka’s talks leave me open mouthed..and even before I can pick my jaw off the floor and say something, she would have gone and said something even more hilarious/outrageous/interesting.
*The moment she wakes up,these days, she refuses to get out of bed, till I dont give her her jacket. And while I am putting on the jacket, she keeps talking,”Oh my goodness,Mommy,my hands are freezing..my bones are breaking”. We put on the jacket then, she stretches her hands and legs and asks me to fix her bones.:D
*One day after she got home from school, she asked me to make a particular dish called daal-chakli- the maharastrian version of daal dhokli I had already cooked lunch and said,it would take me a long time to make the said dish.”Look Mommy, when someone wants to eat, something, they have to eat it..when you want a kiss,I can’t give you a cuddle right??” I was like..umm..ughh..blah..umm.. I gave up,trying to answer her and got busy with cooking!
*Babushka is a very very finicky about how things need to be done- when brushing, the tooth brush needs to be wet first, then paste applied, then wet again..sometimes,I rush through these motions and she gets mad, because she didn’t see me do it.Anyway,SD helped her brush the other day..and I heard huge praises being showered on him..”Now thats a good daddy..Well done..You did it absolutely RIGHT!” I asked her what all the fuss was about..and she told me,he remembered to wash the brush first, before applying paste!!!*rolling eyes*
*And this one is my most favorite..
SD’s friend was rough-housing with his son..so SD said,”see if its a boy,you can rough-house with him..you need to be gentle with a girl..”I told him,”its all in your mind..you can rough house with a girl too!!” Before he could reply,Babushka said..”Nahiii Papa,it will be a girl..dont think BOY!” I asked Babushka to give him a punch to show him! She gave him a tiny punch and then said,”Now what do I do next??” LOL!
*Everytime,Babushka wants to do something-like watching TV,going out somewhere, eating a treat, she asks us literally 10 times,AFTER we have agreed to let her do it.And it is irritating..and more often than not,end up saying,”dus baar kyu poochna hai?”(why do you need to ask 10 times?)..so, when we were planning to go for her 4 year checkup,I asked her,”Babushka, are you sure, you will walk up to the town center?” She said,”yes”..I asked again the night before, she said “yes”..then,I asked her that morning,again..this time, she didn’t answer..just glared at me..I asked, yet again..She just sighed..and said..”Haaaaaaaaaan..dus baar kyu pooch rahi ho?” (yessssssssss, why are u asking me 10 times?) And before I could answer back, she goes on to say..”Ohh yeah, because I ask u ten times, right?” LOL!
* At bed-time,she just doesn’t stop talking..One night I was super-tired and even after I told her to stop talking repeatedly, she didn’t stop.I snapped, ” You need to stop talking now!Zip up!!” She looked at me and without blinking, said,” No zipping up..only breaking up..I am going to take a break..Actually no,my mouth is taking a break.” I just couldn’t reply-because I was too busy, pressing my lips together,so I don’t burst out laughing.
And this,my friends,is just the tip of the ice-berg..there is plenty more, where that came from..if only my pregnant brain, could remember everything..but never mind..there is a whole month for me,to bore you to death, with these..yup.. I signed up NaBloPoMo..yet again.. so..yeah.. stay tuned:) The madness begins!

I am back:) -Post 1

Hello,my lovelies!
Hope you are doing well. My laptop is back and so am I. When I didn’t have a laptop at my disposal,I kept wanting to write so many things. But, when I got my laptop,I was very sad..for reasons, that I will talk about another time..and didn’t feel like writing.
Anyway,so much to share..
First off,I have postponed my drive test.. I was just getting too stressed..I still have a bit of learning to do- 3 point turns, reverse parking, safe merging on the highway(which is mandatory in our zone),driving just 5-10kms lower that the speed(I am still driving atleast 20kms lower) -Anyway,the bottomline is.. all the stress was making me more and more nervous and as a result I was making more mistakes.I am much more relaxed after the decision to postpone..I will now be taking the test, sometime next month. In the mean-time,I am driving around as much as possible.. even without Dee(my instructor) and SD…I have taken to shamelessly, begging friends to accompanying me.:D Or else,a tired SD gets dragged out at night.
And now for some pregnancy news..
We are officially in the third trimester- the last stretch..I am getting bigger.. my tummy is getting bigger.. I am happy this time,so far I am still not getting any huger than I already was.. If anything,I am still able to wear my normal tops and have got a couple maternity yoga pants. In fact, I am happy to be still wearing a size 16!!! yayyyy 🙂 I was recently talking to a friend and realized, how good it is for your ego to dress up smartly..All through my last pregnancy,I wore loose tent-like clothes, and felt like a hag.. this time, just little well-fitted but still comfortable clothes, have done heaps of good to my ego..and I feel beautiful..despite being huge!
Babykins is kicking more and more and I have started feeling BHCs from time to time. The toilet breaks are coming sooner:D
Babushka is getting clingier as time goes..I think the fact that I am not as physical with her as before,is making her nervous all of a sudden. She actually asked me,the other day,”Mumma, will you still love me,after the baby comes?” I hugged her tight and said,”Of course,I will!” And then, the little miss went on to ask me,” Will you love me more or the baby?” Gosh!!I was speechless..I told her,”I love you LOTS and LOTS n the baby will be little,so,I will love her a little”.. oh- we are under strict instructions to call the baby HER and not HIM!
I had my GTT(glucose tolerance test) two days back..I had gestational diabetes, last time and so,we had been monitoring my sugars, from the start of this pregnancy.. even, monitoring my diet.. So,far the sugars had behaved well and were well under the limits.. but on the day of the test, the fasting sugar levels were borderline…Now,I will know in two days what the levels at 1 hour and 2 hours were like..If its still border-line,then,I can still try and control it with diet.. lets see, fingers crossed.
I will be seeing the OB and an endocrinologist on Monday… Phew.. busy days..LOL.
I am in nesting over-drive last few days..I have been re-organizing cupboards,cleaning,re-organizing some more, sorting clothes-Even SD commented.. where are we going to keep the baby’s clothes and things?LOL!
We haven’t even started looking at baby Gear this time.Last time..we already had bought tonnes of clothes and short-listed most of the things,we wanted to buy,by this time.I have the same list on my fridge this time, but,I can’t tick anything off it!! We went to get some towels etc,2 weeks back..and guess what we came back with..3-4 baby outfits- 2 pinks,1 blue,1 neutral. Babushka picked the pinks, naturally and threw a huge fit, when she saw the blue at the check-out counter! But,I have been knitting/crochetting.. made two pairs of baby booties and working on a vest now.Have a look-

Will be back with our Easter weekend details and Babushka chats:D
Till then,be good!!

Methi Paratha with Tomato Chutney

Last week,I found a bunch of fresh Methi(fenugreek leaves) in our local Indian store and I can’t tell you how thrilled I was. Winters are here in the Southern Hemisphere and if Paratha is not a winter food what is:)
My childhood was spent in a small town in Rajasthan, called Lakheri, where fresh produce was abundant. And my father’s family was well-loved and respected there,so as a result,we always,ALWAYS had more than enough fresh produce at home. Dinners in the winter months was mostly some kind of a vegetable paratha or vegetable pulav and soup.
So,the moment I laid my eyes on that fresh green bundle,I knew,I was going to make Methi Parathas.

Now if you have finished drooling, here’s the recipe:

Methi Paratha

Ingredients:
4 cups of whole wheat flour
1 medium bunch of fresh fenugreek leaves
2-3 tbsp fresh yogurt
1 green chili
2 flakes of garlic
2 tsp sesame seeds
2 tsp oil
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp cummin-coriander powder
salt to taste
warm water for kneading the dough.

Method:
1. Pluck and wash the fenugreek leaves.Pat dry and chop finely.
2. Make a paste of yogurt, green chili and garlic.
3. Take the whole wheat flour in a wide plate and add all the ingredients and knead into a firm dough.Keep it aside for 15-20 minutes.
4. Take a lemon sized ball of dough and roll out into a flat round.
5. Roast on a pan.Apply a little oil on each side, and toast a little more.

Serve hot with yogurt/raita/pickle or chutney.

Here’s my mom’s recipe for Tomato chutney. Its my ultimate favorite chutney and it gets made in no time,at all.

You need :
4-5 medium sized tomatoes
2-3 flakes of garlic
1 green chili
2 tsp oil
1/2 tsp cummin seeds
Salt
red chili powder
a pinch of sugar.

Method:

Wash and cut the tomatoes in to chunk sized pieces.
Heat oil in a pan and add cummin seeds. When the cummin seeds start splattering, add the tomatoes and let it cook on a medium flame.
When the tomatoes start getting squishy, add chopped green chili and garlic. We don’t add the garlic and green chili before the tomatoes,so that maximum flavor is retained.
Add salt, red chili and sugar and let it cook till the tomato turns into pulp and all the water dries out and all you are left with is tomato pulp.
This chutney is a great accompaniment for parathas and also tastes great with toast.

I hope you enjoy these recipes as much as we do and if you do try any of these,do leave me a comment and tell me,how you liked it:)

Carrot Halwa and Squares:)

Last week,DH got a great deal on Blu-ray DVDs and he picked up the Harry Potter Series. We introduced our little Diva to Harry Potter and since then,we have been watching HP,every night..and if she has it her way, even in the mornings.
So,anyway,on last Sunday,we went out for a late lunch-early dinner and after we came back, sat down for a marathon run of HP. While we were watching the movies,I got two things done-
1) Made Carrot Halwa
2) Completed the crochet squares for my bag.
Here’s my stack of Crochet Squares:

And as for the Halwa, here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:
8-10 Large carrots
1 1/4 cup whole milk
200 gms fresh Ricotta
3 tsp ghee
1/2 cup sugar(you can change this as per your taste)
Raisins and cashewnuts

Preparation:
Wash,peel and grate carrots.
In a thick bottomed pan, heat the ghee and add the grated carrots.Toast for a minute or two.
Add the milk and let it simmer on a medium flame, stirring occasionally.
When the milk is almost reduced, add the ricotta and mix well.
Also add the raisins and cashew nuts at this time. Let it cook on a low flame, till all the liquid dries up.
Finally, add sugar and mix well and again let it cook, till the water from the sugar evaporates.

Then, serve yourself a generous portion and dig in! 🙂
Note: This could take 2-3 hours, because you are cooking it on a low flame, but its worth waiting for.
This yields quite a bit- I got a my biggest pyrex bowl full..I am guessing nearly 1L.Just cool it to room temperature and keep it refrigerated.Reheat portions as you require. It should be good for a week to 10 days,if it lasts that long.Just remember to use a dry spoon everytime, you take the halwa out.

My oldest winter memories are of a big pot of carrot halwa, sitting in the fridge and portions of it re-heated for dessert after lunch/dinner or even occasional breakfast of halwa-paratha.
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do:) If you do try it,please leave me a comment and let me know how you liked it:)

Party Pics finally..

Sorry,it took me so long, but Babushka’s Easter Break is on..and you know, what that means, right? Crazy times!!Without further Ado:)
First,the goody bags 🙂 from Mommy’s craftroom.

Brown paper bags, assorted buttons( teacups, stars, butterflies, ladybirds, clouds, flowers, hearts),fancy knitting yarn, some paint,Red Marker to write names, some glue and paper punch..Ta..da.. Green goody bags.

The venue was an indoor-playcenter,so naturally, there was a lot of playing,jumping,bouncing..

And the mad scramble to go up the slide!!!

Ms.Babushka got upset, because Friend R and BFF A were playing together..(I never knew petty jealousies start so early!!) And so Friend R,being the sweetheart she is,was running after Babushka, dancing around her, trying to cheer her up:) Sweet,no?

Much Awaited Cake:)

It was three layers of chocolated mudcake with butterscotch filling and covered with green fondant, decorated with hand-made flowers, butterflies, mushrooms, edible glitter..Even before the cake was cut, everyone, started laying claims on which decoration bits, they wanted to eat!!! Oh and you can see bits of my new dress 🙂 and the little tum-tum:D

Tired after all the running around, but, still not ready to go home..

And finally the loot!

I have been awarded …

Shruti thinks I am a Versatile Blogger and this, coming from her,I am truly truly honored, for she is someone that I have come to admire a lot,in the last year.Thank you,Shruti 🙂 Sorry it took me so long to write this post.
Now the rules:
RULES

1. Thank the person who awarded you and link back to them in your post
2. Tell 7 random facts about yourself
3. Pass the award

Hmmm..now what can I tell you about myself??? Lets see:
1) My hands can’t stay still..I have to keep them busy all the time..even when I am watching TV or reading…I have to keep doing something with my hands-browsing,knitting,crochetting,chopping veggies, painting nails..:D – Or may be its my brain..that needs to multitask!
2) I hate eating alone-I used to just skip meals or have a milkshake or so,before Babushka came along. Not the best of habits..but what to do?
3) I cannot remember movies..the moment it gets over,I forget it..So,if someone is talking about the funny scenes from a movie,I generally look away..umm coz I don’t remember it!!
4) My mind can be in 10 places at the same time..SD used to get so mad at me,when we first met..he would be talking about sports and I would ask him something totally random..say about trains.. and he would be like..”Now,where did the train come from??”LOL!! But seriously.. just because I asked about trains..doesn’t mean,I wasn’t paying attention about sports..:P I think that proves that its the mind..that needs to multi-task!
5) I cry very easily and I get upset by the smallest things and can’t stop thinking about it.I cried so much through out my first pregnancy..but surprisingly after Babushka’s birth,I dunno where the tears disappeared.. I was still getting as upset as ever..but the water-works never appeared. Now,in the last few months, the tears are back!
6) I don’t like confrontations and am not very happy about arguments.. infact, most of the times,I think of comebacks, long after the argument is over!:(
7) I can’t think of anymore so asked SD and he said,”You snore!” …In my defence,I just have blocked sinuses!!and you!! yes you! you can stop snickering now!

Now to pass on the tag,I pass it on to :
Shruti
Swaram
Retromummy
Nima
