Another simple pleasure shared

DSC03921

When I was growing up,one of  the staple weekend breakfasts, comprised of Kuskara or Phodnichi poli. This is essentially made from leftover Rotis. The leftover Roti/chapati is crushed or broken into small bits/flakes.These flakes are seasoned with salt and a pinch of sugar and stir fried with onions and served hot, garnished with fresh coriander and a dash of lemon juice. Yummm…

I have missed this favorite breakfast, over the last few years since we got married.Whenever I make chapati/paratha for the two of us,we finish it.Or may be one or maximum two chapatis are leftover..we end up eating those,as it is. When I go to India,I ask the maid to make 5 extra rotis, for each meal..that way, every other day,I eat kuskara for breakfast! My dad doesn’t get this fixation of mine..and wonders why I want to eat this, when I can eat something fresh every day..but what can I do..I HEART this.

Offlate, now that Ms.Aadya eats with us..and its not fixed how many chapatis she will eat..sometimes,she sits at the table with us and eats a chapati or two, when we are eating..on other days, she doesn’t even touch it.As a result,we now have some left over chapatis :D..So,the other day,I made around 6-7 extra chapatis, and made this Kuskara for breakfast and asked Aadya to taste it.She didn’t want to taste it,at first..then,when she tasted it,she loved it..and asked for more.Even asked me to give it her for lunch, the next day.I was happy…I would trade the crackers&chips&biscuits  for a good wholesome breakfast anyday!

What were your breakfast favorites when you were growing up??Do your kids, love what you loved as a kid??Do share:)

Nutty Beanie with a flower applique

DSC03926-1

DSC03924 DSC03928

Ms.Aadya requested this hat yesterday, for her to wear to the Teddy Bear picnic at School today. She lovedddddddd it..and didn’t take it off all day.

She picked out a fancy yarn, from my yarn chest and asked me if I could please make a hat for her, that would cover her ears. This is what I love about being able to knit/crochet-I can make things as I like and don’t have to settle for something,I don’t like.

This beanie is slightly longer than most, just because,I needed it to cover her ears..we are so done, with ear-infections.

For this hat,I used:

Yarn- Moda fashion yarn

Hook- 4.00mm

Pattern-I just improvised as I went.I started with –

Ch4,sl st to form ring.

Ch2,10 Dc in the ring.

Ch2,2 Dc in each each DC,all around.

Ch2,DC in first DC,2DC in next DC,all around-This row is repeated till the hat fits the head.-I think two or three more rounds. I was checking it on her head.Once you get the desired circumference,

Ch2,DC on each DC all around- 3 more times, till you get the desired height.

Ch1,Sc all around.finish and weave in ends.

Decorate with a motiff of your choice.I used this tutorial from Applehead’s blog.

I wasn’t very sure about using this color for a kids beanie..but I like the way,its come out!

To Post Or not to Post-Post 23

Since the last post was written and published, after midnight,in Australia,I was wondering,if it counts as the post 23 for NaBloPoMo..then,I decided, what the heck..another  post won’t make a difference and this time,I am enjoying NaBloPoMo,more than the last time..There is no pressure-its easier to write and post something everyday, this time around.

Coming to today’s post..I remembered last night, that I never posted a picture of the goodies that Shruti sent us..so,here it is:)

DSC03917

I am sad the flowers were damaged, when I recieved it..nevertheless,I will always cherish this greeting. Thanks Again,Shruti..Sorry,it took me so long to post the picture.Blogging is so much fun, with the Windows live Writer!! I am loving it!

In other news, today was quite a nice day..When I was combing Aadi’s hair, this morning, the Medicare Ad was on air..and she saw the lice and freaked out.I told her,the little girl, used to cry when her mommy combed her hair..and so she got lice..And the little Puppy, bought it..so we evaded one of our biggest battles.I tied her hair into two pigtails and she was in a good mood..feeling pretty and all.

The only fight we had all day was at dinner table.Dinner was a little late today..so,she was tired and sleepy..and thats not a very good combination..she started playing around with her food.DH sat down to feed her,but both of them were distracted by the TV.Then started the whining.."I don’t like this vegetable”.We are counting our fruit and vegetable servings each day..and aiming for 5..So,I  tried to remind her that she would be one serving short..more whining followed,so i stopped making the chapatis and sat down with her, feeding her.And guess what she said,"Mumma I love this vegetable.”,so I guess all the drama was for mumma to sit next to her.

As for our fruit-vegetable servings, today she had grapes for her morning snack, tomato with her lunch, then she had an apple for a snack and finally for dinner had a serving of beetroot raita and beans..yayy..all 5! I love vegetable raitas..they are  nutritious comfort foods, isn’t it?

Hope you had a nice day too:D

Screeching in..Artsy Craftsy

Here’s presenting our Colorful Zoo on Canvas!

DSC03909 This is our Entry for Artsy-Craftsy June 2010

We started working on our Zoo..a long time ago..and ended up loads of paint on the floor..some more on the clothes and some unwanted spills on the canvas..So,we had to abandon our attempts.

Tonight(technically, its past midnight in Australia,so last night) after I wrote my last post, went in to find, both DH and Aadi, fast asleep..I had to try and salvage, this piece of art..:D

Here’s what we used:

DSC03912

A plastic plate to take our colors in,Animals stencil sheet,a roller brush and balls of soft cotton and/or  rags.

First I painted my canvas, with a bright yellow. Then,Ms.Aadya got to work, armed with soft cotton balls and we just dabbed the cotton balls in color and dabbed on the canvas,to make a  busy backdrop.

Then,I used the rags dipped in color and traced out the animals, randomly. All done..Easy Peasy!

We were half way, through creating the backdrop, when the big spill happenned and we had to stop. I had almost given up on this, but Something made me want to do it..Ohh I know what it was- my love for Shruti!

This one is going up in my guest-room..Another retro decor under $10! I think it will look nice in a kids room too.I am planning on making a couple of these in smaller sizes(4by6 or 5 by 8) and various colors for my market stall..what do you think? Will it sell??Give me an honest feedback please!

Artsy-Craftsy& Daily Banter-Post 22

I am sad today..Sad because another month went by,and we didn’t enter the Artsy Craftsy..I don’t know,where the time goes..I just don’t know…
I think one of the reasons is our busy schedule these days..I am spending so much time outside..that the days that I am home,I am trying to clean or keep the house clean.I used to call a cleaner, once in two weeks,earlier..but we are on a tighter budget, since last couple of months..and so the cleaner had to go..as a result..I am always, trying to catch up with the cleaning..ugh!I hate it….and I hate the mess..so there is no escape. This is the last week of school, then they break up for two weeks..and monday was our last playgroup session..its getting crazy, balancing Ms.Aadya’s social life!!Hopefully,we’ll be able to continue meeting our playgroup friends informally!:) BTW,one of the mom’s at playgroup, told me that she is a regular reader now..thanks P,for your sweet words:)
Anyway,I digress..I was talking about not being able to participate in Artsy-craftsy…Another reason, why I kept dilly-dallying this month, was the mess created by paints..umm..yes..I chickened out at the thought of extra cleaning. And hats off to all you moms-who are able to get their little ones to follow instructions..and churn out all the beautiful entries for each challenge.Ms.Aadya just wants to do her own thing..she just doesn’t want to do what is told or taught..no siree..she wants to do everything myself. And letting her have her way with the paints is just not my way of fun!! Its easier in summer..when I spread out a plastic tablecloth in the backyard and let her muck up to her heart’s content..but now when we are cooped up inside for longer periods..there is enough mess already..and I am always doing catch up ,where cleaning is concerned..OK..now I am ranting.:D..but its a fact..seriously..I am sick of it! LOL!! Today we got a letter from our rental agent that they are coming over for the periodic inspection..and being the mean mommy that I am..I told Ms.Aadya, that if she brings out, anymore toys to the living room, the agent is going to kick us out..the poor child was suitably scared..but I know come morning and the fear would have disappeared!
Sorry Shruti, for not entering this time again..hopefully next time.. I have lots of ideas though, will put them up,when we can do it,on warmer days.
Ohh Today was such a cold day..and Aadi decided to wear her halter top and ghaghra..I was feeling cold, looking at her..but she was not bothered.I kept the heat ON..after a while, she went and put on her jacket, without me asking her.She came out and announced,”Look Mommy,Filany(*finally) I put on my jacket!”
Her favorite hobby is changing clothes..One outfit,EVERY half an hour!
Today, when I was making her lunch, she was playing in her toy room. When her paratha was ready,I called her and out she came, wearing just a micro-mini skirt-one of her old skirts from when she was 18 months old.I got upset, asked her, rather sternly,”Aadi, what is this?Go wear your clothes!”
The little imp walked up to me,hands on her hips and asked me in the very same tone that I have when scolding her,”Mumma, yeh kisne sikhaya aise words bolna?”(Mumma, who taught you to say this?)..We ask her the same thing, when she says/does something silly or rude!
Speaking of rude, this weekend,I asked DH to help me with something, while I was cooking. He was watching FIFA reruns and grunted, made a face and muttered.I got mad, told him,not so nicely,I don’t need his help and could he please “GET OUT of my kitchen”.Naturally,he was irritated too..and told me,”don’t say Get out in front of A-A-D-Y-A.” Ms.Aadya, who was standing by,playing with the dough, looked up,told me very calmly,”Mumma, don’t say bad words.Suna Mumma, don’t say these kind of bad words jaise Get out in front of me,ABCD Aadya!” I was like..umm OK,I am sorry. And promptly, she said,”Now,thats a good girl,I am proud of you”..Where was DH,you ask? well,he was busy laughing into the couch cushion!

HairStory-Post 21

kala-tika

Aadi loves her hair..but hates brushing it.Her hair is so soft, silky and long, that when she is sitting in our laps,we can’t help but touch it.And she hates it.. “Don’t play with my hair!”,she screams.I have to admit here,a little sheepishly…that I was the same..I was vain about my hair!!and since it was silky soft too,all my friends wanted to touch it..and I hated it..:D So,anyway, this is not about me..its about the star of the blog, the little Diva 🙂 Speaking of her hair..I am getting tired of our hair combing battles every day!I just have to pick up the hair brush and she starts crying..the brush touches her hair and she screams. So,everyday I threaten her that I will get her hair cut[P.S. now I understand, why I always had short hair growing up] But the fact is I LOVE her long hair and don’t have it in me to cut it..but seriously…sometimes,I feel,I should just get it cut,so that we can avoid, atleast one of our battles.

I leave you with some pics of the gorgeous hair..but before scrolling down, don’t forget to touch wood!

Here’s Ms.Aadya kissing her Maamu –October 2009

Z2jyyqx

This is at Shanghai airport,December 2009-I dared and cut her hair, before coming back to Melbourne

And this was taken today,DH came home early and the little princess was kissing her Dad happily!(6 months and its already longer than what it was before the cut!!) Come on,Knock on the wood,NOW!
